AIMEE MANN

Bachelor No. 2

(SuperEgo) By rights, Boston-born singer/songwriter Aimee Mann should be
poised for the kind of breakthrough success Shawn Colvin enjoyed
a few years back with A Few Small Repairs. Mann, hard on her
Oscar-nominated contribution to the Magnolia soundtrack, delivers
an album of 13 exquisitely crafted, worldly wise tunes. But
without major-label fanfare, the job of singing her praises falls
again to an adoring chorus of fans and critics. The opening
track, ''How Am I Different," is one of a handful here that can
be read as a veiled swipe at an indifferent music industry: ''I
can't do it/ so move along/ do you really want to wait until I
prove you wrong?" Let the big boys wait. Fortunately, we don't
have to.
